Is there a need for capacity building for Volunteer and Small Staffed Museums?

It seems that grant funding available from state and national programs is being used by VIM and small staffed museums to acquire stuff such as ICT equipment, develop [build] exhibitions, and have consultants come in for projects to enhance the opportunity to get more stuff.There does not appear to be much in the way of developing capacity to manage museums and their collections by way of education and training, and yet these capacities are most relevant to achieving sustainable museums.Have I…See More

It is surprising that there is a wave of negative feeling about accreditation of museums. Of the 39 standards in National Standards for Australian Museum & Galleries only one requires the input of cash - that is related to the purchase of computer technology.
Much as it is difficult for people to DO THE WORK, the remainder require human activity.

It seems to me that the pervasive "grants culture" across Australia has inspired museum people to expend their energy developing exhibitions et al. I believe that this culture of having a showpiece comes at expense of learning, caring and nurturing the materials heritage of our nation.

It seems to me that the pervasive "grants culture" across Australia has inspired museum people to expend their energy developing exhibitions et al. I believe that this culture of having a showpiece comes at expense of learning, caring and nurturing the materials heritage of our nation.

Recently the cry "there are more museums per head of population in Australia than in any other nation " has been touted. Rubbish! FACT There are as ,many, or more, square miles per community in Australia…
