What is CAUMAC?

The tertiary education sector in Australia is responsible for a significant portion of the Distributed National Collection. CAUMAC is a group consisting of those who work in, or are interested in the work of, university museums and collections in Australia.

Originally an independent group, CAUMAC voted to become incorporated with Museums Australia as a Special Interest Group in the 1990s.

We seek to ensure that museums and collections in the tertiary education sector are extensively deployed in supporting their host institution's goals of teaching and learning, research and community engagement and that the best professional standards are applied to the management of university museums and collections.

We seek to:-

Draw support from colleagues through the sharing of information and experiences,
Link with other museums in Australia and elsewhere,
Ensure that university museums are represented in the advocacy work of Museums Australia,
Advocate for the use of collections in university programs,
Network extensively with university-based and other museum colleagues.

Hi CAUMACians and seasons greetings,

On the CAUMAC wordpress site there is a short report about a conference I attended recently at the University of Ghent all about university museums and academic heritage.!

A question to ponder over summer - which Australian universities do you think take their heritage seriously and how are they doing this? Be very interested to hear your thoughts.

Hi everyone,

After the last CAUMAC AGM at the MA Conference in Canberra, we have a (slightly) new committee.

We also decided to set up a wordpress site for the group and will be attempting to build links with as many Australian University Museums and Collections.

There was interest at the AGM in undertaking a sector wide review.  There was much discussion on what the parameters for a review should be.  We will be looking at developing a consultation process (including some face to face meetings) to try and flesh this out.

University Collections in Germany

An interesting article in Nature about moves at a national level in Germany regarding the heritage values of university collections.

Hi Clare,

There is/was and I'm glad you could make it. Hopefully this will be the start of reinvigorating the group over the next few years.

G'Day Andrew,
Thanks for organising this site. It has great potential.
I was wondering if there was going to be a CAUMAC SIG meeting at the MA Conference next week? I can't find it on the programme and would hate to miss out.
